VIEWS OF A CITY
featuring new work by Paul Elia and Gordon Leverton

Opens Saturday, December 4th. Show runs from Dec.4 -Dec.23rd.

Please join us from December 4 – 23, 2021 at the Paul Elia Gallery for the opening of Views Of A City, a holiday gathering celebrating the works of Gordon Leverton and Paul Elia. Both of whom are established Hamilton artists with instantly recognizable styles. Bringing their unique perspectives together for this exhibit invites the viewer inside the artist’s experience while exploring the built urban environment around us.

Including a Special Feature of Art by Young Emerging Artists
We have invited Young Emerging Artists (YEAs) from 3-15 years old to come create Urban-inspired works of art with us! YEAs will be creating their own interpretation of a Gordon Leverton painting or a Paul Elia digital illustration and it will be featured in the Paul Elia Gallery during the ‘Views of a City” Holiday Show, alongside new work by Paul Elia and Gordon Leverton. We both have created a rough sketch that the YEAs are using as inspiration.  It was  free to enter and a complimentary 12x12” canvas was provided, all mediums accepted.
We are so excited to celebrate Young Emerging Artists and to offer this opportunity to have their work exhibited in a gallery for the first time! Please come out to support and view their work!

HAMILTON ART GALLERY (HAG) PRESENTS PANSIES!

Opening Friday, September 17th from 7-10pm.

In the summer of 2020, in the course of our curatorial explorations for the 3rd Hamilton Biennale, we noticed that a number of male artists we were researching were pursuing the use of floral motifs in their work.

Floral motifs have been used in art by male artists from Fantin-Latour to William Morris and Andy Warhol to Damien Hirst.

While traditionally employed in still life and as decorative embellishments, they also often bear the weight of a more freighted symbolism. We invite you to explore this current, mostly local crop.

- The Hamilton Art Gallery (Andrew McPhail & Stephen Altena)

Many of you already know that I have purchased a huge building at 1167 Cannon Street East in Hamilton's up and coming Ottawa St. neighbourhood! It's an old industrial building that I will be renovating into a large new gallery on the main floor with my living space on the 2nd floor. It is being designed by Toms + McNally!

I'm all moved out of Glenfern Ave. and I have set up a temporary gallery in the new space while we renovate the rest of the building. You can still view and purchase prints here. I accept cash, credit card or debit. Come by for a visit and see the building while it's still in it's raw state!

By now it’s a surprise to no one that the city of Hamilton is in a significant state of transformation. Just consider the number of artists whose work is devoted to the changing face of its skyline, its neighbourhoods, and its urban nodes. With featured works from Paul Elia, Stephen Brookbank, Gord Leverton and David Trautrimas, this exhibition presents a range of perspectives on our city’s urban spaces, and the delicate, beautiful balance that often exists between its industrial vestiges, heritage architecture, and civic revival.

Opening Reception on Fri. Jan 13th
Show runs until April 29th 2017.

September Art Crawl review by Stephanie Vegh

"Though I haven’t visited often this past year, I was drawn into Socald Studio Gallery in spite of the pervasive jazz flute to take in Paul Elia’s Hamilton Strip series of digital prints. In addition to his exceptional though nowadays widely distributed images of Hamilton streetscapes - you can see some stonking huge ones at Stonewall’s Restaurant down York Boulevard - Elia has expanded his repertoire to include other cities in the Ontario rustbelt, some of which include the use of select, muted colours. At present I’m not seeing quite the same visual richness in these views of other cities - there’s a reduced range of values that makes these buildings appear flatter than their uncanny Hamilton counterparts - but I remain glad to see the series evolving in a larger direction."

BRAND NEW piece in the Hamilton Strip series - The Century Theatre

This is an image I have been working on for the Hamilton Strip series for the past few months. The source photos were taken in December 2008. For those of you who don't know, this building is being torn down as I type this. It is truly sad to think that the building will be gone just as I finally finished this piece in honour of such a striking building.

Hamilton Strip review
by Stephanie Vegh

"The body of work for which I was witnessing the most enthusiastic audience response for the night wasn’t related to ReMix at all, but rather was on display at Mixed Media in both the main space of the shop and its small gallery alcove. Paul Elia’s Hamilton Strip is a relatively simple undertaking - digital drawings of local streetscapes adapted from photographs - but the images achieve a great deal by skillfully negotiating a medium that is too often used with no skill at all to depict an otherworldly imaginative space. The wide panoramas fusing together several photographs to create a single source image read as narratives to a graphic novel or a film noir of Hamilton and illustrate the strange confluence of structures that can share a single street address in this city, from industrial shells to family homes."
